This completely rewritten edition (first, 1990) creates a generic text for all adult intensive care units, with an emphasis on fundamental principles that should prove useful outside the context of the ICU, as well. The text is deliberately "problem- oriented" rather than being "disease-oriented": coverage ranges from a basic science review covering circulatory blood flow, respiratory gas transport, and the threat of oxidant injury to pharmaceutical toxins and antidotes and drug dosing adjustments in the ICU.
