So start by removing the variable located on the right side of the equal sign. If you add, subtract, multiply, or divide on one side of the equal sign, you must do the same on the other side of the equal sign. Be careful with negative signs. Check your answers by substituting them back into the original equation. Helpful Hints: First, cross multiply. Second, try to isolate the variable on the left side of the equal sign.
