If this God is going to Save Israel, He will need to do more than Deliver them from Egypt. He will need to Redeem them from their sin. Redemption means to “purchase.” God will have to “purchase” sinful Israel to be His firstborn son. But how will God redeem Israel in 1446 B.C., so many years before He will send His Son, Jesus? This is a question you must answer correctly or you will misinterpret the entire Bible.It will take blood—the blood of an unblemished, innocent lamb for now. But how can the blood of a lamb do such great things as redeem this nation called Israel? Well, as you have learned in your catechism classes about the water in baptism, and about the bread and wine in the LORD’s Supper, it is not these physical things which do such great acts, but the Word of God and His promise in, with, and under these physical things. The blood of the sacrificial lambs and other animals in the B.C. world are more than types for the blood of Jesus because they do more than point Israel to the promises fulfilled in Jesus. They actually offer atonement for the sin of the B.C. people by the promise of God’s Word that Jesus’ blood will one day pay the price for. This is what St. Paul is getting at in Romans Chapter Three when he says that we are justified by God’s “grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood …. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in His divine forbearance He had passed over former sins.” (Romans 3:24 – 25)This book covers all of Exodus.
